Fun Fact about Syracuse/Onondaga County …. did you know …..
…that democracy began right on the shores of Onondaga Lake? The Peacemaker came to the shores of Onondaga Lake over a thousand years ago, bringing together the five powerful nations of the Haudenosaunee. They uprooted a white pine tree and threw their weapons of war into the hole. After replanting the tree, the Peacemaker place an eagle on the top to warn the Haudenosaunee of any dangers to this great peace. This tree is known as the Tree of Peace and is a symbol of this union.
