Patchwork Plus Welcomes Quilt Designer Nancy Murty Nov. 19, 2011

Quilter, author and fabric designer Nancy Murty will sign copies of her book, “Sisterhood—A Quilting Tradition,” from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 19 at Patchwork Plus Quilt and Yarn Shop, 2532 Cherry Valley Turnpike (Rte. 20), Marcellus.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will include a trunk show of the 11 quilts in her book, along with other patterns.

“Nancy’s book features traditional pieced quilts that have been given a fresh look for today’s quilters,” says May Arnett of Patchwork Plus. “She will talk about why she chose the patterns she did, and how she gave them an updated look.

“Nancy is extremely creative,” says Arnett. “Her quilt designs reflect her art background and her interest in nature as a subject. She blends elements of traditional pieced quilts with those of creative art quilts.”

Murty, of Farmington, is owner of Bee Creative Studio, which specializes in pictorial appliqué quilt patterns. She opened the studio in 1999, after graduating from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and spending seven years in the advertising industry.

Her quilts have won numerous awards, including the Fairfield Master Award for Contemporary Artistry at the 2004 International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston.

Since 2004, Murty has been exploring mixed media artwork, using paint and dye on cotton or silk textiles, and then stitching details into the surface to add depth and dimension.

She also designs whimsical fabric collections for Andover Fabrics.

“Sewing has always been a part of my family’s heritage,” she writes. “Over the years, I’ve had the great fortune of meeting many wonderful people through quilting, and many cherished friends have been folded into this sisterhood as well.”

Refreshments will be provided. The program is appropriate for quilt makers of all skill levels.
